What is Bowen therapy?

Bowen therapy is a remedial body technique that helps the body's own healing resources to achieve balance and harmony.

How does it work?

It works on the connective tissue (fascia) of the body.  Fascia envelops, separates and influences every organ, bone,  muscle, nerve etc., in the body.  It has been called the 'endless web.'  Recent studies have shown it to be the largest and richest sensory organ, having a profound and far-reaching effect on the body's physiology.  Within the fascia are sensory receptors, in particular:  Ruffini and Golgi receptors.    We apply a slow, sustained pressure to a  muscle, ligament or tendon.  After a few seconds, the above mentioned sensory receptors begin to communicate with the brain.  They will tell the brain to either lengthen or tone.  The  tissue begins to change and we make a Bowen move (gentle push) over the structure we are addressing.   People generally report an immediate sense of relaxation.  However, because the treatment continues through the week, many feel the changes over the next few days.  Vagal tone is increased and 'fight / flight' patterns are removed from the central nervous system.  Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological issues, including acute sports injuries and chronic conditions.

What does a session look like?

The recipient lies comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed.  A session is between 30 and 60 minutes.

Who was Tom Bowen?

Tom Bowen (1916-1982) was an Australian osteopath.  He ran a very successful business seeing about 280 patients per week.  He had gifted hands and was a very generous man.  He began a clinic for children with special needs that was continued for many years after his death.
